    It’s in the Cards Tutorial

Do you believe in fortune telling? I don’t know about you, but I used to have a Magic 8 Ball®. I loved playing with it. The idea was that it would magically tell your fortune when you shook the ball and looked in the window for the answer. Mostly I used it in elementary school to find out if a secret crush liked me back. Although I don’t have a Magic 8 Ball anymore, I thought it would be fun to make up a set of fun fortune telling cards using the same 20 responses that are inside the ball. What you will need: 20 ATC cards, playing cards or…

    Shaving Cream Marbling Technique

Have you ever tried the shaving cream marbling technique? I’ve seen this technique before, but never tried it until now. It was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. Supplies I used: Baking sheet and aluminum foil Squeegee Ink (Golden’s High Flow) Skewers Shaving cream from Dollar Tree Bristol paper I covered the bottom of a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Then I spread a layer of shaving cream on the foil and smoothed it out with the squeegee. Next I dropped several colors randomly over the foam and swirled it around with the skewer. The paper was placed over the foam and ink and pressed down…

    Using Gesso In Altered Books

I love using old books for my art journals and turning them into altered books. There are several ways to prepare your pages. This post will address using gesso. Liquitex makes a clear gesso, but I will not show you any photos of this process because, it’s clear. It goes on white and dries clear with some grit in it that creates a toothy surface. Usually when I am working in a used book, I want to cover the text some what to add my own artwork, so clear gesso is not my first choice. If there is a blank page and you want to add some protection to the…

    Mini Canvas and MonoPrint Tutorial

Recently, I received a few random art supplies. Part of the supplies were these tiny mini canvas. They are 2”x2”. With some of my Gelli® printing plate mono prints from the workshop that I took with Julie Fei-Fan Balzer I traced around the canvas onto a section of the deli paper. With colored pencil I drew 2 portraits on the mono prints within my guidelines. When I was done, I cut out the portraits. I used Golden’s matte gel and a painting knife to spread the medium onto the canvas to act as a glue. The image was placed over the gel medium right side up and smoothed out. One of…

    Tissue Paper Paintings Tutorial

The inspiration for the tissue paper paintings came from the book, The Usborn Complete Book of Art Ideas, by Fiona Watt. Supplies I used for this project: Tissue Paper (mono printed on a Gelli Arts printing plate with acrylic paints) Watercolor paper Matte medium Derwent Inktense pencils Derwent Inktense blocks Paintbrush I found that the Gelli Arts printing plate can be addictive. It is super easy to use and you can amass a lot of prints in a short amount of time. In the Usborne book, they use colored tissue paper. Right now I have more prints than I know what to do with, so I chose to use the…
