    Meandering Book Online Workshop

I love working on paper. I also love portable art making. On the first floor of my home, I use a spare bedroom as my studio. The rest of the living space is on the second floor. This means I often tote my art supplies up and down the stairs, especially in the evening when I go upstairs to watch (or mostly listen) to a movie on Netflix. I also like to travel light and carrying a bulky, hard cover, art journal is not something I enjoy. I rather carry a soft covered art journal and a small pouch of art supplies to the park or cafe. The last couple of…

    Travel Art Supplies

I’m back from my weekend trip to Boise, Idaho. I brought minimal travel art supplies but they were more than enough to keep me busy at the airport and on the plane. In my last post, you could see the travel art supplies that I took with me. The only supply that I didn’t use on my trip was the white gel pen. I also forgot to point out the sharpener that also acts as a point protector. (The link doesn’t go to the exact one that I have. I couldn’t find it online.) I’m so glad that I brought the sharpener as I had to sharpen my pencils. The…

    Using Gesso In Altered Books

I love using old books for my art journals and turning them into altered books. There are several ways to prepare your pages. This post will address using gesso. Liquitex makes a clear gesso, but I will not show you any photos of this process because, it’s clear. It goes on white and dries clear with some grit in it that creates a toothy surface. Usually when I am working in a used book, I want to cover the text some what to add my own artwork, so clear gesso is not my first choice. If there is a blank page and you want to add some protection to the…

    Tissue Paper Paintings Tutorial

The inspiration for the tissue paper paintings came from the book, The Usborn Complete Book of Art Ideas, by Fiona Watt. Supplies I used for this project: Tissue Paper (mono printed on a Gelli Arts printing plate with acrylic paints) Watercolor paper Matte medium Derwent Inktense pencils Derwent Inktense blocks Paintbrush I found that the Gelli Arts printing plate can be addictive. It is super easy to use and you can amass a lot of prints in a short amount of time. In the Usborne book, they use colored tissue paper. Right now I have more prints than I know what to do with, so I chose to use the…

    New Art Journal

A few weeks ago I started a new art journal. A new art journal is a blank slate that will take you where ever you wish to go. This particular art journal is an exploration into mixed-media experimentation. I bound the art journal with watercolor paper in a long stitch. The covers are made from the back of the pad of watercolor paper. The first layer on the pages is gesso, then watercolor and then random bits of collage from a magazine and other artwork that I have done. I also: Created portraits with watercolors Made patterns and blobs with watercolor paints Used Pinterest as inspiration. I thought I could…
