    Altered Book Update

It’s time for an altered book update. When I started this project, I didn’t realize how much fun it would be to work in my altered book. I have been using gesso, acrylic paint, acrylic ink, graphite, neocolorI, neocolorII, watercolor, markers, wax crayons and colored pencils. The book is expanding because of all of the layers and wrinkling of the pages. I don’t know if the binding is going to stay together without breaking or cracking at the seams. For this reason, I have not been collaging or using thick layers of paint. I love using the scraping technique to get the thinnest layer of gesso possible. Any extra paint…

    Koi Coloring Pens As Watercolor

I’ve been using Koi Coloring Pens as watercolor in my art journals. The technique that I use with the Koi Coloring Pens: sketch the face with a pencil add the Koi Coloring Pen wash the ink with the waterbrush wait until dry erase any extra pencil You don’t need very much ink from the pen to get a lot of color. The pages that I am working on can’t take a lot of water or they will wrinkle a lot, so this technique of only wetting the ink a little works well. In the video you can see that I get a little bit of pilling from scrubbing the brush…

    Playing In An Art Journal

Playing in an art journal by drawing, painting or sketching makes me happy. My page was done with watercolor¬†and a Gelly Roll pen for the hair details. There is no problem going over the watercolor with the pen once the page is dry. The Gelly Roll pens come in many colors, thicknesses and qualities, like sparkle or glaze. It’s not perfect. I wasn’t striving for perfect and when I’m not striving for perfect, what ever happens is awesome. I’m working on practicing. I don’t have many blank pages in this journal. Once I get to the end, I will go back through and add more artwork or details to previous…

A World of Artist Journal Pages

I love this book: A World of Artist Journal Pages. It’s not a how-to book. It’s a collection of art journal pages curated by Dawn Devries Sokol. You may see in the short video, that I have flagged some pages. The pages that are flagged are conversations with featured artists. A few of the questions she asks the artists are, “What do you do when you’re blocked?; What are your favorite mediums to use?; Which artists do you look to for inspiration?” I love that last question because I am learning about new artists in addition to all of the artists that are included in the book. There are over…

Art Journaling with Pencil and Markers

Art making can be as simple as working on paper with pencil and markers. I found #The100DayProject¬†and decided it would be a project that I could do with an art journal that so far, had only one image in it. Here are some of the images that I have done with pencil and markers. The paper is thin so I am staying away from acrylic paints, inks or super wet watercolor work in this journal. The book is on the smaller side of what I normally use so the art work doesn’t take very long. Plus working with the minimal of supplies makes it very fast too. I’m not looking…
