    Quick Art Journal Page

A quick art journal page is what happens when I only have a few minutes. What helps make it quick is that I had a background started on this page in my handmade art journal. The swipes of black paint were created earlier with acrylic paint and a one-inch sponge brush on Strathmore 500 series mixed media paper. Afterwards I sewed the paper into a journal using the coptic stitch. I used directions from the book Bound: Over 20 Artful Handmade Books. Now that I see all my steps, maybe I cannot call this a quick art journal page because of all of the preparation that came before sketching the…

    Zentangle Inspired Art

One of my favorite subjects for my art journals is a woman’s face and zentangle® inspired art hair. As a certified zentangle teacher, I have an immense love of abstract patterns. You cannot make a mistake. You may think you made a mistake but chances are, you are the only one who can see it. Zentangle inspired art is a piece of artwork that doesn’t fall into the definition of a zentangle. A zentangle is created on a 3.5″ x 3.5″ tile (piece of paper). It’s created with ink and graphite. There are no rulers, erasers or stencils. It’s non-representational and there is no orientation. It is usually created in…

    Lady Bird

Creating a Lady Bird fits right into my love of whimsical drawing. The basic lady bird only takes a few steps to create. Then it’s time to embellish with top hats, shoes, eyelashes, fancy tail feathers and patterned bodies. My fascination with putting red shoes on my birds came on accident when I was in a Tracy Verdugo workshop. It was one of those happy accidents that only come when we are busy creating and not thinking about creating. It is in the act that we make discoveries. Blobs and Squiggles

Blobs and squiggles make an interesting and fun way to let loose. Somewhere between abstract art and drawing is this place of playful mark making. The full directions for this project can be found in the book: The Usborne Complete Book of Art Ideas. This book is geared towards children with easy to follow directions. The projects in the book don’t require a lot of fancy art supplies to get great results. It’s a highly recommended resource with many types of fun and interesting projects. Step One: Blob and splatter red paint on your paper. I used Daler-Rowney Acrylic Ink. Step Two: Add marks with a brush pen. I’m using…

How to Cover Up an Art Journal Page

There are only a few steps to cover up an art journal page with gesso. SUPPLIES: Golden’s black gesso plastic card or wedge Golden’s white gesso I don’t believe in tearing out pages in my art journals. I will work on it to get past that ugly stage that some pages go through. But sometimes I just want a fresh start. White gesso, unless applied in a heavy coat, or in several coats will not always cover up the page. Used alone white gesso is great if you want to preserve what you already created and make it recede. What I am talking about is going back to neutral. You…
