Why do people make art and what is it for?
I have been asked this question several times and in many different forms and variations.
I don’t have a good answer for everyone.
I create art because of the beauty I see in it and I would like to share the beauty.
I create art because of the peace it brings me and I would like to share peace.
I create art because of the message and I want to share the message – art can be created by anyone.
I create art because it brings me joy and I want to share joy.
I just know that for myself, when I look at art in what ever form it may be, it transports me.
When I was about six or seven years old I thought I would be able to fly. Unfortunately it didn’t work the way I had hoped. I wrapped a pillow around my stomach with a belt (just in case) and launched off my bed with outstretched arms, a la Superman. I didn’t fly and I didn’t make it to the other bed. But instead did a belly flop landing between the twin beds in my bedroom. The landing knocked the wind out of me. Shocked, I realized then that they must be doing something special on TV to make Superman fly. From then on, I looked for alternate ways to transport myself.
My favorite way is through creating art.
Art moves people in different ways and perhaps it doesn’t move some people at all. They don’t get it. And that is okay.
